GAME OVERVIEW
OLYMPIC TRIALS is a game for 1-4 players. It can simulate a selection of 6 Olympic events, which can be practised separately or played simultaneously in the Full Game. In order to progress to a higher level, a certain standard has to be achieved and your score will be accumulated to the High Score Table. If you excel in a particular game, whether in playing the Full Game or just practising, you may beat the World Record! After you have played through a cycle of 6 events in a Full Game, you will start again but each time with harder standard and tougher opponents.

• Press START to start any selected event.
• To pause while playing an event, press START; to resume play press START again.
• To return to Main Menu from within an event, press START + SELECT + A + B simultaneously.

MAIN MENU

Press START to return to the Main Menu.

1. HURDLES

At the starting block, a side-on view of the track with 2 runners will be presented. Your runner is in lane 1, wearing light shorts, above the other competitor. At the top of the screen will appear the following statistics, reading from left to right:
• Player number & initials
• Elapsed race time
• Number of false starts (depicted by 1 or 2 crosses)
• Qualifying time (time limit allowed to beat in order to progress)
• World record (time limit allowed to beat in order to set a new World Record)

Playing the game
The starting orders - Ready, Get Set, Go - will appear. Make sure you have the GO sign before you start running or you will have to re- start. Three false starts would be enough to make you disqualified.
Once you start running press 'A' & 'B' buttons IN TURN as fast as you could to build up speed. Press any direction key to jump when you approach a hurdle. If you mistime your leap, you will hit the hurdle, stumble & lose time. The course is 110 metres long where you need to jump ten hurdles.

Control Keys
UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT Press any of these buttons to jump. You must run fast to be able to jump properly or the button would have no effect.
'A' & 'B'
To build up speed, you must press these two buttons in turn i.e. 'A' then 'B' then 'A' then 'B' etc. Press quickly to build up a reasonable speed.

2. LONG JUMP

At the starting block, a side-on view of the Long Jump track with your athlete ready will be presented. At the top of the screen, the following statistics will appear in a window, reading from left to right:
• Player no. & initials
• Distance jumped (shown once you have jumped)
• Number of foul jumps (depicted by 1 or 2 crosses)
• Qualifying distance (the distance needed to beat to progress)
• World Record (the distance needed to beat to set a new World Record)
At the bottom of the screen appears a Speed Indicator indicating your running speed. When you jump, it will be replaced by an Angle Box showing the angle you are about to jump.

Playing The Game
Press 'A' & 'B' buttons alternately to build up enough speed until you reach the line at the start of the sandpit. Then press one of the direction buttons and HOLD IT DOWN until the required angle to jump at, which will be shown in a box at the left bottom screen, has been reached. Release the buttons and you will see your athletes leap into the air and jump.
If you run over the line, you will get a Fault. Two more attempts to perform a legal jump are allowed.

Control Keys
UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT
To jump, press any of the direction buttons. You must run fast enough to be able to jump properly or these buttons will have no effect. Hold the button down to increase your angle of ascent and adjust to the best angle for jumping.

'A' & 'B'
To build up speed, you must press these two buttons in turn i.e. 'A' then 'B' then 'A' then 'B' etc. Press quickly to build up a reasonable speed.

3. ARCHERY

The target you are aiming at and a side-on view of your archer ready to release the bow will be presented. A flag, the Wind Speed Indicator, will change from arrow to arrow to show the wind speed at the current time, will appear with a pointer facing left or right. The further it is away from the flag, the stronger will be the wind & the more you will have to compensate when firing.
Below the Wind Speed indicator is a box which counts down from 5 to 0, indicating the time limit for you to shoot. '0' shows that you have scored a fault. Three faults and you will be disqualified.
At the top of the screen, the following statistics appear, reading left to right:
• Player number & initials
• Score from this shot (shown once you have fired)
• Number of shots fired (shown as 1/5, 2/5, etc.)
• Total score so far
• Number of fouls (depicted by 1 or 2 crosses)
• Qualifying score (score needed to beat in order to progress)
• World Record (score needed to beat to set new World Record)

Playing The Game
Use the direction buttons to control the cursor, which automatically moves in a set direction, to alter its velocity until the correct firing point is reached. You should take into account the Wind Speed & Angle to fire at the target so get the arrow as close as you can to the centre of the target in order to score maximum points. You have 5 shots which have to be fired within 5 seconds or you will commit a foul.

Control Keys
UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT
The direction buttons control where your cursor aims at. As the cursor keeps moving, you have to be quick to have full control.

'A' & 'B'
These buttons are used to fire your bow. Hold them down to increase the Angle of your arrow. The lower the angle, the higher will be your arrow on the target and vice versa.

4. SHOT PUT

A side-on view of the Shot put track with your athlete ready to begin will be presented. At the top of the screen, in a window, appears the following statistics reading from left to right:
• Player number & initials
• Distance thrown (shown once you have thrown)
• Number of fouls thrown (depicted by 1 or 2 crosses)
• Qualifying distance (distance needed to beat to progress)
• World Record (distance needed to beat to set a new World Record)
When you start to throw, an Angle Box appears, showing the angle you are throwing the shot at. Once the angle is selected, at the bottom of the screen appears a Power Indicator which shows the force you are using to throw the shot.

Playing The Game
You need not press any key until you have reached the fault line. Then press any of the direction buttons and HOLD IT DOWN to reach the required angle to throw at. It will be shown in the box at the bottom left of the screen. Once you reach the angle, release the buttons and a Power Indicator will be shown at the bottom of the screen. Press 'A' & 'B' button alternately to build up enough power to throw the shot as far as possible. Act quickly as limited time is allowed to build up the power. A short while later, the shot will be released and you can watch it fly through the air and lands.
Note that after you have chosen the angle to throw at, you need to take a step forward in order to throw. You will get a Fault if your body goes over the line. Two more attempts to perform a legal throw are allowed or you will be disqualified.

Control Keys
UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT
Press any direction button to start your throw. Hold down the button to increase your shot's angle of ascent. You should judge which is the best angle to throw at any particular shot power.

'A' & 'B'
Press these two buttons in turn i.e. 'A' then 'B' then 'A' then 'B' etc. Press quickly to build up a reasonable force.

5. ROWING
A top down view of 2 canoes awaiting at the start line will be presented. Your canoe is the one on the left. At the top of the screen in a window appears the following statistics, reading from left to right.
• Player number & initials
• Elapsed race time
• Number of false starts (depicted by 1 or 2 crosses)
• Qualifying time (time needed to beat to progress)
• World Record (time needed to beat to set a new World Record)

Playing the Game
The trick is - do not leave the oars in the water for too long or they will drag and slow you down. [Ready, Get Set, Go] will appear but you only start rowing when you see the GO sign. You are allowed 3 false starts or you will be disqualified.
Press 'A' or 'B' buttons to put the oars in the water and hold it down to bring the oars back, thus propelling the canoe along. To bring the oars out of the water, you release the button. You have to maintain a good pace to move at any record-breaking speed. Once you master the know-how, it will be a simple task to achieve.

Control Keys
'A' or 'B'
Press either one of these buttons to put the oars in the water. Hold it down to bring the oars back and push the canoe forward. Release to return the oars to normal position.

6. CYCLING

A side-on view of a Velodrome, with 2 cyclists at the start line, will be presented. Your cyclist is the one with the black hat on the inside lane. At the top of the screen in a window appears the following statistics, reading from left to right.
• Player number & initials
• Elapsed race time
• Current lap number
• Qualifying time (time needed to beat to progress)
• World Record (time needed to beat to set new World Record)
At the bottom of the screen, a Power Indicator appears showing how much energy you have left. To the right there is a top down map of the track with a small cursor showing where you are.

Playing the Game
Stamina & strategy are needed to succeed. When the race begins, a certain amount of Power has been stored up for you, but it gets depleted as you accelerate. Quickly press the 'A' & 'B' button alternately to constantly keep up the speed as the race is over 4 laps. Move up and down the track would allow you to overtake the other player or block them. It is advantageous for you to be on one of the banked section. The map show your present location in the Velodrome.

Control Keys
UP/DOWN
These buttons allow you to move up & down the track, to overtake or block the other cyclist.

LEFT
This button accelerates your speed but your power will be reduced at a higher rate. If zero appears, you will be slowed right down. To start accelerating again, you have to build enough Power.

RIGHT
This button decelerates your speed thus conserving Power. But your opponent can take advantage of your slower speed.

A' & 'B'
To build up Power, you must press these two buttons in turn i.e. 'A' then 'B' then 'A' then 'B' etc. Press quickly to build up a reasonable force or no power will be installed.

Text in the game binary includes LINK UP, presumably a reference to a multiplayer link cable mode of play. However, no such mode exists in the actual game.

Olympic Trials was developed for B.I.T.S. by Divide By Zero.
E N D I N G
Olympic Trials was not programmed to feature an ending sequence. After you complete the full set of events with either qualifying or world record scores, the game loops back to Hurdles, the first event, and crashes.
